Description

This is one of two German Cultural Studies modules which are required study for German Intermediate (post-Beginner) students taking 40 credits of German at Level Two, prior to residence abroad. It provides intensive reading of modern German texts of diverse character, studied not only for linguistic formulation but also for contextual meaning. Texts will include novels, short stories, newspaper articles and poetry. Film extracts, both factual and fictitious, and other pictorial material will also be used. The intention of the course is to build up students' reading capabilities significantly, while also introducing them to and allowing them to study in reasonable detail selected phases, tendencies and artefacts of 20th and early-21st century German culture.
